Fall staples are about to take over wardrobes everywhere. There are 9 that you absolutely must have in autumn 2023 and they are all here.
Time to get educated this autumn. Welcome to today’s class – fall staples 101. Unlike the Kardashians’ on-again-off-again relationship with reality TV, we know February and September are all about Fashion Week. Well, at least after the world started functioning again.
True, it’s an absolute whirlwind to keep up with everything happening in Paris, New York, Milan, and London, and it’s not like designers don’t love to play with our attention and imagination, but we always appreciate the good heads-up of what’s to come.
It’s a bit tricky to talk about trends and a minimalist capsule wardrobe at the same time, but it is possible to follow the latest fashion trends without flooding your closet.
Plus, my selection features fall staple pieces that will be a big thing moving on. Not only in 2023. However, keep in mind that the upcoming A/W season will be about making a statement and finding a place under the spotlight. Read: statement jewelry, power suits, bright colors, big bags, a lot of everything.
From fall staple shoes to fall staple boots, here you’ll find a lot of tempting items you’ll want to wear. They are designer-approved and ready to level up your styling game faster than Jennifer Aniston reaching one million followers on Instagram. Which is pretty fast, FYI.
GET READY TO SEE THESE 9 STAPLES EVERYWHERE:
1. Wrap up Coat
Sorry to break it to you, but the cold is coming. I mean, it’s not like you didn’t know it. The ultimate list of fall closet staples begins with a wrap-up coat, which is fitting, and you’ll be wanting to wrap yourself up when the wind chill comes.
Lately, designers have been showing us that there’s nothing more precious than a piece to build your entire #OOTD around. I mean, who cares if you’ll wear sweatpants or a little black dress underneath? You can go for a classic like Balmain, or go for a more sexy vibe à la Saint Laurent or Bottega Veneta.
If your style is more ‘go hard or go home’, then a bright-colored Gucci coat is exactly what you need in your life right now. Maybe a couple of vacations as well, while you’re at it.
2. Bomber Jacket
Talking about fall staples trends, I just have to mention the bomber jacket. Whether you like it or not (you should!), they will never go out of style. That’s why you’ll see them more (and more) often moving forward.
Going to the office? Sam from accounting has got one. Booking a Scandinavian vacation? The lovely Airbnb host wears it as well. Walking the runway? Hell yeah, supermodels are loving it.
Get a basic or opt for the crazy detailing. If you want bonus points, then get some vegan leather involved here. You’ll only need a pair of light-washed denim jeans and chunky sneakers to finish off the look.

3. Tuxedo Blazer
You better get ready, because fall 2023 exudes major girl boss vibes. If you are a loyal trend devotee, I’ll explain with a closer look at what happens on the catwalk.
Alaïa’s romantic yet elegant example shows us the best of both worlds. (Who remembers Hannah Montana?) The creative forces behind Givenchy and Tom Ford have presented strong silhouettes and statement shoulders.
In other words, there are a lot of ways to interpret femininity, but one thing is certain – it’s high time for some big blazer energy. We love the Saint Laurent one. Pair with platform shoes and chino pants for extra sassiness. It’s not reserved for Doja Cat and Doja Cat only.
4. Maxi Dress
Sometimes the best way to go is the long way. Many high fashion brands play with lengths A LOT, but they haven’t done it THAT much till now. Following last year’s spring example, Balenciaga, Saint Laurent, and Alaïa have all fallen for the maxi perspective.
You can say if you think I’m wrong, but isn’t that just the best trend ever? Comfortable? Check. Elegant? Check. Sexy? Double check! Minimalist? YESSS!! Definitely worth the caps-lock.
Finish the total look with a pair of Mary Jane shoes and a small bag, fitting just enough of what you need for that party. Phone and keys. You know, the absolute essentials. Maybe a lip gloss if you can squeeze it in the side.
5. Knee-High Boots
Since we are talking about high lengths… You don’t have to be the main protagonist of a Hallmark movie or on a vacation in the English countryside – although both sound kinda cute – to wear knee-high boots. They are a must! Again!
I feel like they always go and come back, but this time it’s with a bang. We’ve already seen the romantic version in Chanel’s A/W show. Hermès rewrote the classic. What way you should lean towards?
It honestly doesn’t matter because knee-high boots (once again) are right next to fall essentials in the dictionary – At least they are in mine. — Plus, give me a reason to wear heels when you can look fierce in these. I’m waiting… Seriously, I’m waiting.
6. Plain White Tank Top
When Kaia Gerber walked the Prada Fall 2022 show in a plain white tank top, I knew it. I knew, that, thank God, simplicity will be on top once again (pun intended). This is the kind of staple for a fall wardrobe women love.
Although I didn’t speak with Bottega Veneta and Chloe’s creative directors in person, I’m sure they understand that less is more. If you are currently making this closet makeover (click here for my expert guide on the matter), this new trend is the best example that you won’t be out of style options just because you’re not shopping like Cardi B on a vacation.
If you are wild – at least as much as like her – wear it with a midi skirt and smokey eyes. And if not, go for the traditional POV and match it with classy denim.
7. Big Bags
The list of ladies’ essentials is ever-growing. There was once a time when all you needed was your purse. Nowadays, you’ve got to bring your purse, phone, keys, makeup, wet wipes, hairbrush, and the list goes on. So it makes sense that our bags get bigger with it. Heavy? No. You’re a strong, independent woman!
The fall fashion staples for 2023 include the extra-large tote, and we are grateful. If you are on a date, you should have it. Or if you are out getting groceries, you should have it. And if you are a trendsetter, you should have it. You get the point, you should have it.
8. Low-Rise Jeans
Low-rise jeans are another 90s thing to talk about. I need to ask first: What’s your opinion? I’m still having mixed feelings about them.
Yes, Vaguera showed us that fall trends are devoted to comfort and sex appeal at the same time, but I loved the approach. Stella McCartney has also gone for the sexy yet super elegant take on all of it. Which is, you know, sexy and super elegant.
I’m well aware it’s risky to talk about trends and minimalism together, but if you get yourself a basic piece (read: no detailing, not look-at-me-I-am-Gisele-Bundchen kind of one), it’s all good. I approve.

9. Statement Trench
Consider this a slight shift in direction. While the beige trench is a must-have for literally every single time you need to add some spice and elegance to your day, this time the statement pieces are making their way into our fall closet.
I don’t think the metallic and highly glamorous suggestions of Michael Kors are going to make you happy, but Burberry (once again) offers British elegance, mixed with NY street style philosophy.
Indeed, classic fall pieces are no longer the classic fall pieces, but maybe it’s a good thing. We know fashion changes with time, and maybe some little alterations are what we need to spice things up.
Now you have a list of the fall staples 2023 brings, there’s nothing stopping you from getting ready for the upcoming season – other than maybe the current fuel prices to get to the store. Perhaps I’ll stick to online shopping.
Fashion For Thought
Whew! That was quite a runway show of staples to keep an eye on. As the colder months approach, your closet should reflect a mix of the latest trends and timeless basics. Embrace neutral colors, skinny jeans, and those denim jackets that never go out of style.
Fall outfits can seamlessly transition from a daytime casual look with ballet flats and a plain white tee to a date night dazzler with a dressy top and a pair of stilettos. The key? A versatile fall capsule wardrobe.
Think of oversized sweaters for those “sweater weather” days, and crisp button-downs paired with wide-leg jeans for that perfect fall outfit. Let’s not forget the classic trench coats, ready for any weather, and the quintessential ankle boots – the cherry on top of any fall outfit.
As you venture into outdoor events this season, remember it’s always a great way to stay comfy while making a statement. From Free People to Miu Miu, luxury to affordable, your options are endless.
You’ll find that this fall, whether you’re rocking midi skirts or long denim ones, the whole point is to feel confident and authentic to your personal style. And hey, while you’re at it, maybe throw in a fun earring or two.
After all, fashion’s favorite season is upon us, and there’s no better time to flaunt your style than now. Keep it chic, keep it minimalist, but most of all, keep it you. Happy shopping, fashionistas!
