So you’re wondering how to start a fashion blog, and you figured who better to ask than a fashion blogger, right? That’s smart. I wish I had thought that when I was starting. Maybe this blog would have got where it is a lot faster.
Oh well, no use dwelling. Instead, how about I take 10 years of experience and show you the steps I went through, pass on some tips and tricks, and reveal the truth of how to make a blog for beginners.
First, to give you a little context, here’s where I’m coming from. Back in 2012, I started my blog. I say it was a fashion blog, but it was more of a personal blog where I could share my thoughts on things, show different outfits, and my journey in fashion.
I did it because I love it – I love styling, creating looks, and matching pieces together, not just for myself but for others too. Fashion has always had a special place in my heart. When the internet came along, I couldn’t help but share my passion with the world.
Then over a few years, I began to transition from a personal blog into a business blog. This was no longer just a hobby on the side. Now things were getting serious and talks of actually earning money began. I was now a professional blogger. Which was amazing as it meant I could do it full-time, but also challenging as it was now FULL time!
There’s a big difference between a personal blog and a business one.
When it’s personal, the focus is you. The audience is broader and people just read and follow your work because they like you. In contrast, a business blog is about the reader. The audience is more specific and targeted. They come to your blog to get information that will help them. It doesn’t matter as much who you are. It’s about what you provide.
Both types can work really well. But what I will say is that when I rebranded my site into a business blog, that’s when real money started to be made. I wasn’t just some girl who wrote about clothes, anymore. I was a professional providing a service to both readers and brands.
My advice: If you want to be taken seriously, then take it seriously.
If you’ve made it this far, then perhaps you are serious about learning how to start a blog in 2022. I will share with you the steps to take – and the ones to avoid – along with some fashion blog examples to get you going. This could be the start of something incredible for you! How To Start A Successful Blog That Makes Money
Blogging Guide For Beginners
All the steps I took to turn my blog into a full-time business that is now generating over $4000 a month.
HOW TO START A FASHION BLOG THAT MAKES MONEY:
1. Choose A Topic (Niche) Within The “Fashion” Subject
If you’re making a blog, then you’re going to be writing posts about the same subject A LOT. So it best be a subject you’re happy to talk about often. No use making it about something that you get bored with after 3 or 4 posts. You have to LOVE it. How you feel will come out in your writing, and people can sense when someone is faking it.
Once you have your interest, get specific. The more narrow your niche is, the less competition there will be when you make a business out of it. This will allow you to grow faster. Then you will have the option of expanding later. Aiming at a broad audience is a sure-fire way to get lost in the crown unless you have big bucks to throw into advertising. Whereas, if you’re wondering how to start a fashion blog with no money, targeting your niche is the way to go.
2. Pick A Title & URL
Possibly the most fun part for many people. Coming up with a name for your blog. I want to say “don’t overthink it”, but it IS important. So, at least, put some thought into it. You want a title that’s pretty self-explanatory and easy to spell when you tell it to someone. If possible, have the keyword for your blog subject in the title somewhere.
At the same time, keep it broad enough, so your blog has the ability to expand in the future. Had I gone with ‘Capsule Wardrobe by Savina’ then I would have boxed myself in. Hope that makes sense. A good title doesn’t have to be clever or completely unique. It’s the front door. It just needs to be neat, and attractive and get people wanting to know what’s behind it. You may be wondering how to start a fashion blog on Instagram. This is less of a blog and more of a feed curation, so we can talk about that in another post.
3. Choose A Platform & A Host
I can’t stress just how important this step is. I’d like to show you how to start a fashion blog for free, but some parts will require an investment, and this is one of them. The platform you use to create your site and the host you go with will have a major impact on the future of your blog. I was with Blogspot for around 8 years. When I moved to WordPress it was like being given the keys to your own car. The freedom that came with it was liberating. You have so much more control over design, widgets, features, etc. You can really make it your own. Mine went from $0 to currently making close to $4000 a month. This would not have been possible without being a Self-hosted WordPress website.
Now for hosting there is Bluehost. By far the best one around for new bloggers. I originally chose them after seeing that so many (if not all) successful bloggers have started with them. After now having experienced working with them for two years, I can’t recommend them enough. Not only are they one of the most affordable – which is very helpful when you’re looking for how to start a fashion blog on a budget – but also their customer service is great. Fast and reliable, just how I like my web hosts. If you’re serious about starting your blog, click here and start it right.
4. Set Up Your Blog
Here are the EXACT steps for how to start a fashion blogging site on WordPress:
Step 1 – Download WordPress. Click the top right corner where it says ‘Get WordPress’.
Step 2 – Pick a host. Go to the Bluehost website here and click on ‘Host Your Site’. Choose your plan, and smash through the sign-up process. If you’ve got your name and domain, then put it in. Make sure your domain is available in ‘.com’ before you finalize the name.
5. Pick A Website Theme & Color Palette
Now we get creative! You can pick a free theme on WordPress, but I would recommend getting one designed exactly how you want it. You can find a huge variety of WordPress themes on Etsy, at very reasonable prices.
Pro-tip: Make sure the theme is mobile-friendly, as not all of them are. Remember, your theme and palette will distinguish your brand. Make it consistent, and people will recognize your work wherever they see it.

6. Plan Your Content
Planning is half the work. The better you plan your content, the easier it will be to stick to. Knowing what you will be writing about in the upcoming months allows you to focus on any research you may have to do beforehand. It also means you can tailor posts to certain times of year or seasons. You won’t be wasting any time wondering what to write about each week.
7. Get Your Content Published ASAP
Don’t put it off any longer than you have to. Once you have a couple of posts ready, get them out there. Success breeds success. Once you’ve got the ball rolling, it’s easier to push – Insert a motivational cliché of your choosing. So stop daydreaming about how to start writing a fashion blog. We’re not looking for perfection here. We’re just looking to start, so COME ON!
8. Be Consistent. (Post at least once a week)
I’ve been posting just one post a week for the whole of 2021 and my blog is currently getting over 50 000 mostly viewers and has made over $3000 last month. So don’t get discouraged if you can “only” post once a week. Just be consistent and don’t skip any weeks! The positive effect of this will compound over time.
9. Drive Traffic To Your Site
Driving traffic to your blog is vital. After all, what use is having a blog if no one sees it!? In order to make money, you need to be getting visitors. Pinterest is a great source of FREE traffic – Perfect for how to start a fashion blog with no money. Sign up right away and begin sharing your content there immediately. Other platforms such as Instagram, Snapchat, and Facebook can be used, but for me, Pinterest works best for visual media.

10. Set Goals
To get where you want to be, you’ve got to know where you’re trying to go. Set measurable targets for your blog. Views, shares, revenue, sign-ups. They all count. Even with these tips, this endeavor is far from easy. It takes time, effort, and persistence. Don’t expect to be an overnight success. Slow and steady may not be the fastest, but you will reach the target.
There will be days, sometimes weeks, when it gets really hard. It will seem like things aren’t working. You might even want to give up. I’m not telling you this to deter you. I want to be real with you. I want you to succeed, and knowing what it takes will help you get there.
These tips are not everything you need to create a successful blog, but they will help you get going. There’s a lot more that goes into it. I’m sure you’re still wondering how to start a fashion blog and make money. I aim to help the best I can. There’s more to come from this space. All I know, all I learn, all I realize, I will pass on.
