When it comes to the post pandemic fashion of 2021, it is all about cozy, relaxed clothing. So when we look at fashion trends, there is no surprise that the oversized shirts are everywhere this year. Seeing as we haven’t been able to go out and do much for a while, there hasn’t really been a reason to dress up often. There hasn’t been a need to squeeze into skinny jeans or suck it in to zip up our little black dress, so the priority has been comfort. We’ve also seen this trend on the runway with brands such as Valentino, Louis Vuitton, and Prada presenting their take on baggy outfits. Oversize is the new norm. Tight may show off our shape, but the oversized shirt style allows us to be sexy, stylish, and most importantly comfortable.
In today’s post I’m going to show you a simple and easy to recreate outfit idea using an oversize shirt that I’ll be wearing on repeat this spring. I’ll also share a few useful tips on how to style baggy button downs, and of course where my favourite places are to get good quality, sustainable oversized shirts from.
How To Style Oversized Shirts For Spring:
1. Classy with a bit of edge
Oversized shirts are one of the most versatile items in your wardrobe. They can be styled in numerous ways, but my go-to spring look is with high-waisted denim shorts, Dr. Martens boots, and a cream tote bag. Eat, sleep, oversized shirt outfit, repeat.
I just love mixing and matching basic pieces (shirts + denim). As to stay away from boring and give this outfit a bit of edge, I added my new vegan Dr. Martens to the ensemble. They are super comfy by the way, and you can’t really tell that they’re not made of real leather. They really complete this oversized shirt look.
If you’re not a fan of combat boots, just replace them with your favourite white sneakers, sandals or loafers.

Throwing on a casual tote in a neutral tone is also a great way to balance the outfit and give it some casual chic vibes. Mine is the Karl Lagerfeld Rue St-Guillaume one. It’s a newly added piece to my wardrobe and since I’ve got it, I haven’t stopped wearing it!! It’s so pretty and so functional. Neutral totes are must-have for summer and finding a good one that could carry all your essentials but look stylish at the same time is not easy! I swear by this one.
2. French Tuck
You can wear your oversized shirts open with a cami top underneath, tied into a crop top, as a shirt dress, tucked in and buttoned up, or even half-way tucked also known as the “French Tuck”.
If you haven’t heard the term French Tuck before, then let me break it down for you. Tan France (from Queer Eye) made the term popular. It’s simply tucking in your shirt at the front whilst letting the back drape. Who knew that the standard method of avoiding having to have your shirt tucked in that’s been used by the majority of school boys for decades, would actually become a popular fashion trend!? The technique allows us to created a polished look whilst maintaining a casual approach. As France says, it elongates the body and balances your silhouette. All I know is that is comfy and looks great. It’s a win win for me. The French Tuck shirt is flattering on all body types.

3. Why you need oversized shirts in your wardrobe
The oversized shirt is a fundamental wardrobe staple. Not just for spring but all year round due to its versatility. I don’t know about you, but I love clothes that are comfy and stylish at the same time. The relaxed button-downs definitely fall into this criteria.
They can be worn in so many different style combinations, so you’ll never get tired of them. And the best news – they will never go out of style! So no fear of this just being some kind of oversized shirt trend that will pass with time.
4. Where to get good quality oversized shirts from
If you’re looking to get your hands on some great oversized button-downs, here are my favourites. (I’d recommend getting a couple of white ones and one in a neutral color.)

5. Other ways to style it
Here are a few more ways I love wearing oversized shirts in spring.
Oversized White Shirt + Leggings + Chunky Trainers

For a casual everyday look, style your favourite supersized button down with a good pair of leggings (I’d go for an earthy tone one) and chunky white trainers. Don’t tuck it in as we’re going for a relaxed, loose fit here. This is the perfect “running errands” outfit when you want to look good but keep it super comfy at the same time. When the weather get’s warmer, you could even lose the leggings and replace them with cycling shorts to give you the oversized shirt dress look.
Oversized Shirt + Smart Pants + Sweater around the shoulders

Going on a fancy lunch with your girls, followed by a shopping spree, and wondering what to wear? Throw on a white oversized shirt with a smart pair of trousers, wrap a sweater around your shoulders and finish the look with plain white sneakers. (Or loafers if you prefer.)
Open Oversized Shirt + Cami Top + Classy Blue Jeans

And here’s my last go-to spring outfit idea with an oversized shirt. Wear it open over a white cami top, and pair it with a classy pair of blue jeans and Converse trainers. You can never go wrong with this look. It’s the perfect saviour for warm spring days when you feel like you’ve got nothing to wear.
