AMSTERDAM TRAVEL GUIDE: WHERE TO GO & WHAT TO SEE IN 48 HOURS

April 7, 2019

THE PLACE

... is the biggest city and the capital of the Netherlands - Amsterdam. Here's a fun fact: there are over 1200 bridges and 165 canals in Amsterdam, which means the capital of Holland has more bridges than Paris, and more canals than Venice! Awesome, huh!?

THE TRIP

I've always wanted to visit Amsterdam, so when I saw this amazing offer on Wowcher, I just couldn't resist. 2 days in Amsterdam with flights from London & hotel stay for £79pp, I mean, how good is this?! My best friend and I immediately grabbed the deal.

THE HOTEL

We stayed in Best Western Plus Hotel Blue Square (4 stars). It wasn't a luxury, but the staff were really nice and friendly, and we also had a Nespresso coffee machine in our room, so I'd say it was a good value for the money. The location wasn't too bad, either - you need to get bus number 69 from the airport, the price of the ticket is €3.20 (you can pay by card) and it takes about 30min. The bus stop is literally outside the hotel.

THE TRANSPORT

Even if you're going for just 48 hours, I'd highly recommend getting a 2-day travel card (€22.50) which you can use for unlimited travel across Amsterdam with bus, tram, metros, and ferries. There are so many things to see, and you actually end up saving money, especially if you love exploring.

THE SIGHTS

Amsterdam has plenty of gems to see! From museums, churches, and theaters, to shopping streets, canals, attractions, gardens, and parks. There is even a floating flower market! 48 hours is definitely not enough to discover everything the Dutch capital has to offer, but we went there purely for all these picture perfect places, street art, Instagrammable spots, and delicious foods.

THE FOOD

And when I said food, so many of you on Instagram asked me to share some beautiful places to eat in Amsterdam. This is for you, my lovelies!

1) THE AVOCADO SHOW

2) PLUK

...As well as REE7, Corner Bakery, MaMa Kelly, Sticky Fingers, and George Marina - if you are looking for aesthetically pleasing restaurants, bakeries, and cafes (according to the Internet). Of course, the list doesn't stop there, but if you're going for the "Instagrammable food", be prepared to spend the extra coin, as the prices are quite overrated. As I said, the one place I'd personally recommend is The Avocado Show. Food, interior, and service - 10/10. `

THE FINANCE

Is Amsterdam expensive? The short answer is YES, especially if you are a 'gourmet tourist', and exploring the food is the purpose of your trip. I'm joking, but there are over 20 million tourists and day-trippers who visit the capital of the Netherlands in a year, hence why the prices are this high. Of course, there are many ways to save money in Amsterdam. Getting a city card is one of them, especially if you want to take a canal cruise, visit museums and attractions, and use public transport unlimitedly. We haven't got a city card, as we went on a content creation trip and we didn't really have time to properly explore the city. Looking at my bank account now, I spent about £60 all together (not including the flight & the hotel) for 2 days, which I think is pretty good.

THE CONCLUSION

Was my Amsterdam getaway worth it? Absolutely. Would I go again? Definitely, but next time I will book a trip in the late spring or summer because the wet, grey and chilly weather in March is just not my cup of tea.

WHERE TO NEXT?

My next planned trip is to Gran Canaria, and I can't wait for it! What's your next destination? If need some travel inspiration, check my travel guides to Bali, Riga, Bodrum and Tenerife.
