Going away and wondering what to wear on the plane? Here are 7 travel outfits that you can always rely on.
Some people underestimate the importance of having good travel outfits for flights and general travel. Regardless if youโre traveling to a far destination like Japan or your flight is only a couple of hours, you should always feel comfy on the journey.
To help you do that, Iโve put together a style guide with 7 easy and versatile travel outfits that you can recreate easily with clothes you probably already own. And if youโre missing an item or two, donโt worry. Iโve added links for all the pieces Iโm wearing under each photo, as well as some good-quality sustainable alternatives from brands that I swear by.
7 Easy Travel Outfits To Get You Jet Setting In Style:
1) Relaxed Sweatpants + Cropped Hoodie + Converse
Get the look:
Starting with the comfiest travel look ever. Relaxed sweatpants styled with a cropped hoodie in a neutral color and white Converse sneakers. Whether youโre traveling by plane, car, bus, or train, this ensemble will always save you when all else fails. Itโs easy, itโs comfy, and you just canโt go wrong with it.
If you donโt own a pair of oversized sweatpants, I highly recommend you get your hands on at least one. They donโt have to be white. The color is up to you and your own preference. Whatโs important here is the fit. We want maximum comfort when weโre traveling, so the more relaxed, the better. You can create many different travel outfit ideas around this one piece.
Here are some of my favorite joggers picks:
As for the cropped hoodie, I love styling oversized pants with cropped tops because they visually elongate the silhouette. So even though your outfit is on the baggy side, you still look fit and put together.
Cropped hoodies Iโd get for myself:
2) Cropped Hoodie + Jersey Shorts + Chunky Sneakers
Get the look:
When I said that Iโll show you easy and versatile travel outfits at the beginning of this post, I meant it.
This ensemble is the summer alternative of the previous outfit, suitable for warmer weather when you canโt bare wearing too many clothes. The hoodie stays but the oversized sweatpants are replaced with soft jersey shorts, ideally made of 100% cotton to keep your body cool during the flight.
The ones Iโm wearing are the MUST-HAVE summer staple I spoke about in my post about 11 Classic Wardrobe Staples You Should Add To Your Summer Closet. Check it out if you havenโt already. You might find some extra travel outfit ideas for summer.
Wear a cami or a basic tee under the hoodie and complete the look with a pair of white chunky sneakers.

3) Jersey Shorts + White T-Shirt + Jumper + White Sneakers
Get the look:
Need a travel outfit for tropical weather? Here you go. Keep the jersey shorts on and throw on a breathable white tee, and plain white trainers and (optionally) wrap a neutral-colored jumper around your arms, in case it gets colder on the plane. (Gotta love that Airplane AC). You can always use it as a pillow if you donโt need to wear it. Bonus points for travel outfit ideas for long flights that are stylish AND functional.
The tee Iโm wearing is one of my favorite summer finds, and itโs a piece of clothing that everyone should have in their wardrobe.
Here are some other travel-approved t-shirts:
4) White Tee + Black Leggings + Denim Jacket + White Sneakers
Get the look:
Here it comes. Another go-to travel look that will never let you down. Black leggings styled with a basic white t-shirt, denim jacket, and a pair of white trainers. An easy, beautiful, minimalistic combination that you should always have to hand.
The important part here is the legging. It has to tick all the boxes โ comfort, stretch, and fit. The divine trinity of close-fit clothing. You want to get leggings that make your legs and booty look good, but not at the expense of your comfort. There is nothing worse than traveling with tight leggings that cut your stomach and allow as much breathing as a sixteenth-century corset. (Just thinking about it makes me feel ill.) When it comes to travel outfits for ladies, the challenge is finding this balance between comfort and style.
The leggings Iโm wearing are from a small, sustainable UK brand called Pour Gaia. They have a good stretch and fit nicely.
Here are some other great legging alternatives:
5) Smart Shorts + White T-Shirt + White Sandals + Neutral Tote Bag
Get the look:
Personally, not a fan of traveling with open-toe shoes (or wearing sandals in general), but here is a travel outfit idea summer demands of us sometimes.
Of course, comfort should be your main priority when planning your travel attire, but you can look chic and feel good at the same time. Itโs all about finding the right balance and the right garments.
My advice is to go for either cotton or linen shorts and pick a pair of shoes that wonโt give you blisters halfway through the journey. They could be open-toe, for sure, just be mindful about them.

6) White T-Shirt + Relaxed Smart Pants + Converse + Big Tote Bag
Get the look:
This is an outfit idea for short flights when you want to look chic, so you can take some nice pics for the gram but keep it cool and casual at the same time.
Relaxed smart pants are definitely an all-year-round wardrobe staple because of their versatility. You can style them up or down, depending on the occasion, and in that case, even wear them on the plane. This allows you to create classy travel outfits without sacrificing your comfort.
Here are my favorite picks:
7) Wide Leg Jeans + Button Down + Chunky Trainers
Get the look:
I have to admit! Iโve always loved denim, but not enough to travel with it until I found the perfect wide-leg jeans suitable for EVERYTHING, including traveling.
They are so light and soft that they donโt even feel like jeans!! And whatโs really great is that they are super stretchy. I donโt think that Iโve ever had a pair of wide-leg denim that is so insanely comfy.
Not linking any other denim options because these are the ones you should get if youโre considering buying any travel-approved jeans. I swear by them. They make for the best travel outfits for planes.
The button-down was from Everlane a couple of years ago, and itโs another great summer find that is perfect for travels. Itโs really soft and fits beautifully. You can wear it on its own as a top or throw it over a cami if you love layering. Either way, youโll have a great airport outfit that is stylish and comfortable. What more could you want from travel outfits 2023.
Your Frequently Asked Questions:
Here are some questions I get often when it comes to travel attire.
What outfit is best for travel?
First things first: the right outfit begins with your feet. A pair of comfortable sneakers is the star of the show for those long trips through airport security โ because, honey, nothing says โIโm ready for TSAโ quite like some chic sneaks.
For a casual look, lean into a cozy sweatsuit made from natural fiber. Pair it with some high-waisted leggings for that โI woke up like thisโ vibe. Remember, being sustainable doesn’t mean forgoing cute travel outfits. In fact, a simple black dress is a versatile piece that can transition from a comfortable airport outfit to a festival-ready look. Pair it with a packable jacket, and voilร ! You’re ready for whatever the weather throws your way.
Slide in a pair of sandals for those warm climates, but if youโre bracing yourself for long travel days, compression socks (the unsung heroes of the travel world) are a good idea. Not only are they the best part of a good travel outfit (shh, it’s our little secret), but they also come in a range of colors, and who doesnโt love a little bit of color pop, right?
Personal style? Let it shine through with a casual travel outfit in a variety of colors, but always remember the beauty of the classic piece. A comfortable dress or a pair of pants is a great addition to any vacation wardrobe.
Remember, the journey might be long, but your outfit choices don’t have to be complicated. Go for comfort, simplicity, and items that scream ‘you’. Because at the end of the day (or long journey), the perfect outfit is one that makes you feel fabulously you.
How do you dress classy for travel?
Starting with the basics: black dresses. It’s the great piece that never goes out of style. A little black number can easily be the perfect choice for those trying to achieve that โfirst-class even if Iโm in coachโ vibe. Pair it with a statement necklace or a scarf of a different color, and you instantly elevate the look.
For those chilly in-flight vibes or unpredictable airport air conditioning, layering is your BFF. Think lightweight cardigans or cashmere wraps that add that extra warmth without bulking up your carry-on. They’re not only the best travel clothes for versatility but are also the best airport outfits to seamlessly transition from boarding to a business meeting or a fancy brunch.
Now, if you’re someone who’s jetting off to a festival straight from the tarmac (yes, we love a multitasker!), festival outfits that blend comfort with chic are a great way to keep things classy. Consider breathable fabrics and flowy silhouettes for that comfortable outfit that still makes a statement.
Last, but certainly not least, footwear. Swapping out those sneakers or flip-flops for a more polished shoe or a sleek boot can elevate your look in a snap. And, if you’re hunting for more comfy travel outfit ideas, a stylish yet functional tote is a great option to tie the whole look together.
Dressing classy for travel is all about mixing comfort with curated pieces that reflect your impeccable taste. Keep it sleek, keep it stylish, and always have that signature piece that makes your heart (and your style) soar.
What should women wear on a plane?
Let’s make one thing clear: comfort is queen when you’re 35,000 feet in the air, but who says you can’t be cozy and chic? Ladies, think of a plane as your runway (pun intended) and let’s get that airport fashion on point.
Now, for the outfit breakdown: Begin with a base layer like high-waisted leggings (because, hello, they’re fabulous and forgiving after in-flight snacks). Pair them with a soft, oversized tee or a classic blouse. For those unpredictable cabin temperatures, layer up with a long, lightweight cardigan or a stylish shawl that screams high fashion but feels like a blanket.
On your feet? Slide into some easy-on, easy-off shoes. I’m talking loafers, cute ankle boots, or those fab comfortable sneakers you’ve been dying to show off.
And ladies, let’s not forget accessories! A statement necklace or some tasteful earrings can level up that look in seconds.
So, the next time you’re scrolling through Pinterest searching for โairport outfit ideasโ, remember: with the right mix of comfort and style, you can make any terminal your personal runway.
Fashion For Thought
Alright, jet-setters, here’s the runway wrap-up โ and I’m not talking about the airport kind. Finding that perfect travel outfit is no easy feat, but you’re in the right place. Whether you’re on a long flight to one of your favorite places or just day-tripping it with a road trip, comfort is queen.
Opt for lightweight fabric for warm weather or an oversized sweater dress for the colder months. And speaking of warmth, a leather jacket or a long cardigan? Classic pieces that are always runway-ready (yes, I went there).
White sneakers or a chic pair of flats? Both are great additions to your travel wardrobe.
For long-haul flights, slide into a pair of leggings (faux leather leggings for a pop of sass) and pair it with a crop top or an oversized t-shirt. Worried about air conditioning? Layer with a lightweight jacket or throw in an extra crop sweater for added warmth. Bonus points for neutral colors. Why? It’s the easy way to mix and match different pieces for different looks. And, if youโre feeling brave on the day of travel, go bold with a pop of color.
Lastly, never underestimate a good crossbody bag or a baseball cap for those not-so-great hair days. So, next trip? Your outfit game is going to be stronger than ever. Pack light, dress right, and always make it fashion! Safe travels, lovelies!
